´´The Farm as a Social Arena´´ focusses on the social life of farms from prehistory until c. 1700 AD, based mainly, but not exclusively, on archaeological sources. All over Europe people have lived on farms, at least from the Bronze Age onwards. The papers presented here discuss farms from Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Germany. Whether isolated or in hamlets or villages, farms have been important elements of the social structure for thousands of years. Farms were workplace and home for its inhabitants, women, men and children, and perhaps extended families - frequently sharing their space with domestic animals. Sometimes important events such as feasts, religious services and funerals also took place here. The household thus became a multi-faceted arena, which brought together a variety of community members that both shaped - and were shaped by - its social dynamics. At times work and other activities defined by the social arena that was the farm even affected long-term developments of society as such. Jada, Jake, and their two children, Cody and Emma, were living in the mountains of the Appalachians. The things that were happening around their farmhouse were getting out of control and Jada was scared to be left alone at the house with the two children when Jake had to go to work in the city. If you haven´t read the first book Sharing the Mountain with Bigfoot: The First Year, please do so for this book is a continuation of that book. This book starts with the second year living on the farm that Jake and Jada purchased to raise their children and to have a little piece of their own paradise. But their paradise is not so peaceful as they would like. Now that Jada knows that there is a creature out in the woods that she never believed to be real, it is terrorizing to go outside with the children and to do the daily chores. Will the family ever find peace living on their farm in the mountains? Sharing the Mountain with Bigfoot series is a true story of one family´s terrorizing encounter with an unknown creature lurking in the woods of the Appalachian Mountains. 1. Language: English. Filled with magic, heroism, and all-too-human characters, Bujold´s Sharing Knife saga is both a gripping adventure and a poignant romance. In this third volume, Fawn, the young farm girl, and Dag, the seasoned soldier-sorcerer, set off to find fresh solutions to the perilous split between their peoples - and encounter new hazards both human and uncanny. The farmers and riverfolk have long distrusted the power of the mysterious and aloof Lakewalkers, even though they depend on them for protection from the evil malices. The proud Lakewalkers, meanwhile, have exiled Dag after learning of his marriage to Fawn, the first outsider to be bound to a Lakewalker in their magical way. But as Dag´s natural Lakewalker ability to manipulate ´´ground energy´´ begins to develop in dangerous directions, he and Fawn realize that big changes are ahead. 1. Language: English. Young, pregnant Fawn Bluefield has just fled her family´s farm to the city of Glassforge, where she encounters a patrol of the enigmatic soldier-sorcerers known as Lakewalkers. Fawn has heard stories about the Lakewalkers, who are wandering necromancers with no permanent homes and no possessions except the clothes they wear and the mysterious knives they carry. What she does not know is that the Lakewalkers are engaged in a perilous campaign against inhuman and immortal magical entities known as ´´malices´´. When Fawn is kidnapped by one of these creatures, it is up to Dag, an older Lakewalker, heavy with sorrows and responsibilities, to rescue her. But in the ensuing struggle, it is not Dag but Fawn who kills the creature, at dire cost. And an uncanny accident befalls Dag´s sharing knife, which unexpectedly binds their two fates together. 1. In a world where malices, remnants of ancient magic, can erupt with life-destroying power, only the soldier-sorcerer Lakewalkers have mastered the ability to kill them. But Lakewalkers keep their uncanny secrets - and themselves - from the farmers they protect. So when patroller Dag rescued farm girl Fawn, neither expected to fall in love, marry, and defy both their kin to seek new solutions to the split between their peoples. As Dag´s powers have grown, so has his frustration with the Lakewalkers´ rigid mores. Fawn and Dag see that their world is changing and that the traditional Lakewalker practices cannot hold the malices at bay forever. Yet for all the customs that Dag and Fawn have challenged, they will soon be confronted with a crisis beyond imagining.
