An inspirational and heartrending memoir about Ben Breedlove, whose videos about his near-death experiences and visions of heaven went viral in 2012, written by his sister Ally Breedlove. On Christmas Day 2011, Ben Breedlove´s soul went to heaven. But it wasn´t his first time there. Ben suffered from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition that posed a constant risk of sudden death. His condition, a thickening of the heart muscle, worsened over time, leaving him weak and fatigued. It also led Ben to some close calls medically, in particular cardiac arrest on four separate occasions, during which he felt the presence of angels and experienced the perfect peace of heaven. Precocious and warm, Ben was close with his family and two siblings, and forged deep relationships with his friends. He loved to wakeboard and wake surf, and he had dreams of visiting foreign countries around the world. He created the YouTube channels TotalRandomness512 and BreedloveTV, and co-created the channel OurAdvice4You, where he posted videos about everything from dating advice for girls to more serious topics like his spirituality and heart condition. Unbeknownst to his parents and family, Ben created a two-part video called ´´This Is My Story,´´ in which he used flashcards to tell the world about his near-death experiences and his beckoning toward heaven. When he died a short while later, at the tender age of eighteen, his family and the rest of the world stumbled upon these videos. The world responded with overwhelming acceptance of the message Ben shared. Sharing his vision of heaven was Ben´s gift to his family, and to the world. And now this is the Breedlove family´s gift to us - an in-depth look at the life and near-deaths of Ben, the strength and faith of a family, and ultimately, the hope of heaven. Do you believe in Angels or God? I do. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ellen Archer. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/peng/002236/bk_peng_002236_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.
Brooklyn Italian: Remembering Williamsburg will take you on a journey back in time. To a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, New York, called Williamsburg. From the beginning of its existence in 1638 to present day, through the rise of industry, two world wars, the Depression of the late 1920s, the rise of the mafia and the immigrants who settled there in search for a better life. In their own words, long-time residents tell their stories of a time when on summer evenings, family and friends gathered on stoops to talk about the happenings of the day or just to share a cup of coffee, when children played stick ball, jacks, and hopscotch till the street lamps came on.... When a handshake meant trust and respect was earned. They came for a better life for themselves and their children. Many enclaves with cultural differences, yet sharing one vision: to pursue the American dream. The freedom to choose, to become, to survive. While notables such as Corning Ware, Standard Oil, and Domino Sugar found Williamsburg to be a profitable place to call home, other notables were making their mark in Williamsburg as well such as the Bonanno family underboss Carmine Galante and the infamous Bugsy Siegel and Alfonse Capone. In their own words, long-time residents of Williamsburg Brooklyn share their life history in letters telling the world what it was like living during the Great Depression, WWII, poverty, and survival. As with each generation change is inevitable and it’s change that allows us to pass on the stories of the generations before, preserving the past to become an integrated part of our future. 1. A significant event occurred in Jim´s life when his son was born. His son, Michael, was born weighing 3 pounds, 14 ounces. He also had several health issues that were eventually diagnosed as a growth disorder. The growth disorder had many characteristics. Most significantly, the disorder made Michael, throughout his life, smaller and slighter than most children or adults. These characteristics led to Michael looking ´´different.´´ Throughout Michael´s life, there were many experiences where he was judged, teased, and bullied because he was small. Children and adults said cruel and inappropriate things to Michael, and stares and rejections were a constant part of his life. As this situation had the potential of being very defeating to both Michael and Jim, both used the experiences they had as a way to shape who they would become and what would happen in their lives. Jim focused on developing a story to help stop bullying and harassment. He felt the need to educate students, parents, and teachers about the effects of bullying on children. ´´Big Ollie´´ is a resource for teachers and anyone who works with children. No child should be afraid to go to school. Jim Jelinske received his undergraduate degree from the University of Whitewater in Whitewater, Wisconsin, and received his master´s degree at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has spent twenty-five years working in various capacities, primarily with children and their families. Jim´s passion has always been to help children and their families lead healthy and fulfilling lives. He has always championed those who have been treated with anything less than respect, especially children. For the last seven years, Jim has been traveling the country sharing his vision to stop bullying, harassment, violence, and disrespect to all people. 1. Language: English. The amazing tale of County is the story of one of America´s oldest and most unusual urban hospitals. From it´s inception as a ´´Poor House´´ dispensing free medical care to indigents, Chicago´s Cook County Hospital has been both a renowned teaching hospital and the healthcare provider of last resort for the city´s uninsured. County covers more than thirty years of its history, beginning in the late 1970s when the author began his internship, to the ´´Final Rounds´´ when the enormous iconic Victorian hospital building was replaced and hundreds of former trainees gathered to bid it an emotional farewell. Ansell writes of the hundreds of doctors who went through the rigorous training process with him, sharing his vision of saving the world and of resurrecting a hospital on the verge of closing. County is about people, from Ansell’s mentors, including the legendary Quentin Young, to the multitude of patients whom he and County’s medical staff labored to diagnose and heal. It is a story about politics, from contentious union strikes to battles against ´´patient dumping”, and public health, depicting the AIDS crisis and the opening of County’s HIV/AIDS clinic, the first in the city. Finally, it is about a young man’s medical education in urban America, a coming-of-age story set against a backdrop of race, segregation and poverty. David A. Ansell, MD., a Chicago-based physician and health activist, has been an internal-medicine physician since training at Cook County Hospital in the late 1970s, where he spent seventeen years. Now chief medical officer at Rush University Medical Center, he sees patients, teaches, volunteers as a doctor at a Chicago free clinic, and participates in medical missions to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. 1. Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms. John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry, husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing medicine; Anders hates his father’s business, but has a real talent for music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything and leaves a day early, much to everyone’s relief; the Walls are disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own psychic visions. Sharing a week with this unlikely cast of characters is pure joy, full of Maeve’s trademark warmth and humor. Once again, she embraces us with her grand storytelling. 1. Language: English.
